Reading the Green by Rosie Jones

Read the Green with your Eyes and your Feet!
Many times when I play with amateurs I am amused at how often they will misread the Green. Most often they will under read the break because they become too general in their attempt to see the break and calculate the speed.

I use not only my eyes to read a break but also my feet, and I do so as I first step on the green as I walk up to mark my ball or as I walk up to pull out the flag stick. If you stay in tune with your feet, legs and body you can feel whether you are moving uphill or down, leaning right or to the left. Too many times a player will only use their eyes to determine the undulation and speed of green and not pay attention to the balance of their body as they site their putt. Remember Putting is all feel and we need to stay in touch with our athletic intuition as well as the visual read.
